20-Yard Dumpster Specs
Home renovations almost always require renting a dumpster. But projects that generate heavy debris require a dumpster big enough to handle the weight of the material deposited in it. A 20-yard dumpster rental from Delta Solid Waste Management may be the solution.
Here’s a guide to 20-yard dumpster dimensions and a deeper explanation of weight restrictions:
How Big is a 20-Yd Dumpster?
22 Ft. Long by 8 Ft. Wide by 3.5 Ft. High
- It can hold up to 20 cubic yards of debris, which is approximately 4 tons on the weight limit.
PERFECT FOR:
- Garage, Attic, and bedroom junk removals.
- Minor Home Renovations.
- Disposal of dense debris*
*IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING OUR 20-YD DUMPSTER
Twenty-yard dumpsters are commonly used to dispose of any dense debris, such as concrete, dirt, and roofing shingles. Although the 20-yard dumpster can hold, theoretically, 4039.48 (liquid) gallons, it is important to consider that the weight of dense debris can add up very quickly. Because of this, weight load restrictions are crucial. Weight limits are safety measures that ensure a load stays within the capabilities of the truck hauling the dumpster to protect you, your property, public property, and the roads the truck driver uses to deliver and retrieve the dumpster.
To give you a better understanding, let’s review Sally and Mark’s first home project:
Sally and her husband Mark recently bought their first home in North Texas. They are so excited to make a few changes to their new home. Their first project is removing and replacing the old and cracked concrete in their driveway. It is a typical straight two-car driveway that is 16 feet wide and 38 feet long. The thickness of the concrete is about 5 inches. Sally and Mark want to rent a dumpster but are not sure how many and what size they are going to need. They begin to do research before reaching out to any dump truck companies.
They learn that they are going to be disposing of 610 sq. feet of concrete and the estimated weight they are going to be disposing of is 9.6 Tons.
Scratching their heads, Sally and Mark wonder what size dumpster they are going to need. The most common mistake in picking the right dumpster is assuming that the dumpster size for your project depends on the volume, measured in cubic yards, of material the dumpster holds.
This can be misleading, because volume alone does not account for the density of the debris to be discarded. Although a 40-yd dumpster holds about 40 cubic yards (an estimate of 5 to 6 tons), this is not the recommended dumpster for the job. Concrete is very dense, and the weight adds up quickly.
In the state of Texas, a dump truck is only able to legally pick up and haul 9 tons. However, one must also consider the weight of the dumpster itself and the weight of the debris inside it. If Sally and Mark requested a 40- or even a 30-yd dumpster and were to fill it to midway or even the top, a dump truck would not be able to lift the dumpster. Sally and Mark would have to remove most of the concrete and rent an additional dumpster.
Work smarter, not harder!
In conclusion, a 20-yd dumpster is ideal for this job. Not only is the dumpster lighter in comparison to the 30 & 40-Yds but it is able to hold a generous amount of concrete. Our 20-yd dumpsters have a fill line so that you know exactly when it’s time to stop filling and call us to remove the dumpster. We’ll return it to you empty to receive the next load.
Now you may be wondering, why is a 10-yd dumpster not ideal for the job? Well, all 10-yd dumpsters are picked up by smaller dump trucks, which can’t hold the weight of any heavy debris.

Delivery Guidelines:
- Placement: We recommend that the dumpster is placed in a space that does not have any obstacles surrounding the area. Make sure that the dumpster will fit the space. Please keep in mind that our trucks must be able to lift the dumpster, so double-check that there aren’t any obstacles above the space or that would block the pathway of the driver.
- Do not overfill: Whatever debris your project will be generating, make sure that you do not overfill. Safety is our number one priority. Please only fill to the fill line to ensure that waste will not fall out the dumpster.
- If you are planning to dispose of dense debris such as concrete, brick, metal sheets, or roofing shingles, please contact us and provide an estimated amount so that we may provide the right dumpster for your project. Our goal is to provide safe and excellent services to your project.
